Cosmetic Gynaecology is a term that has been used in a variety of ways. It can mean anything from gynecologists practicing cosmetic surgery to the aesthetic enhancement of the female genitals. It is this latter definition that most women think of when they consider cosmetic gynecology and what we discuss here. Cosmetic gynecology covers a variety of procedures including labia reduction or labiaplasty, vaginal tuck, and vaginoplasty or vaginal rejuvenation.

Labia reduction

The labia are the folds of skin that surround the opening of the vagina. In some women, these folds of skin are overly large. This could mean the labia are too long, too wide, or have too much volume. The extra tissue can interfere with sexual pleasure and in extreme cases cause discomfort. Some women also find this excess tissue to be unattractive, which causes a lack of self-confidence and decreased intimacy. Labiaplasty or labia reduction surgery is a cosmetic procedure that reduces the size and/or volume of the labia. The goal is to reduce size without reducing sensation.

The need for vaginoplasty

The internal structure of the vagina can change over time. Pregnancy and the vaginal delivery of a baby can cause tearing and stretching that can permanently alter the internal dimensions of the vagina. A fetus passing through the birth canal is not the only thing that can disrupt the structure of the vagina. Often the obstetrician must perform an episiotomy to widen the birth canal during delivery. Sure this surgical widening of the vagina is sutured closed, but it is not always restored to the state it was before delivery. Vaginoplasty seeks to correct or reverse these changes by correcting traumatic changes to the area and the effects of age and hormonal changes.

Vaginal rejuvenation

Vaginal rejuvenation is a term that is used to describe a number of surgical procedures that aim to reverse the effects of age, hormones, injury, and even genetic predisposition to the vaginal changes. Vaginal rejuvenation may include vaginoplasty, vaginal tuck, and or labiaplasty. Depending on the wishes of the patient, the internal and external structures are made either smaller or tighter. For instance, a vaginal tuck (which is akin to a tummy tuck in the abdomen) removes equipoise steroid benefits excess tissue from inside the vaginal canal. Likewise, a labia reduction restores a more youthful look to the outer, more visible areas of the vagina.

Do you consult a gynecologist or a plastic surgeon?

Virtually all cosmetic surgery should be done by a plastic surgeon with adequate training in cosmetic surgery; however, there are some exceptions. For example, a maxillofacial surgeon can reconstruct the mouth and face. In the case of labia reduction and vaginoplasty, you can seek out the services of either a gynecologist or a plastic surgeon. The gynecologist will have more experience working with episiotomies and the anatomy of the vagina, while cosmetic plastic surgeons generally have a better eye for the aesthetic. In real terms, either one of these professionals is good choice if they have adequate experience performing cosmetic gynecology.
